Phoenix and Watson welcome 3 boys

This pairing is a Kazuri to Kazuri match – I don’t do those often as I try to match my girls with their best match, and that isn’t always what I own or bred. However, I was excited to take these two lines that I started and cross them together mixed with a loose line breeding of “Ripley” (GCH Brookhaven Believe it or not” being behind both of these dogs.

Phoenix went into labor on Saturday, and knowing she only had 3 on board, I didn’t want to take the risk getting one stuck (previous litter experience) and so we opted for a c-section. I am so thankful for vets who are available as needed.

I was expecting rubies and lo and behold we got 3 Blenheim boys. Who would have thought??? Not me.

I am so excited to watch these little fellas grow. Our sweet little Easter babies.

Biggest boy 7.1oz

Red boy 6.8oz

Tiny boy

Mom and babies are doing fantastic and already nursing like champions

An open letter regarding epilepsy

An open letter to the fancy:

On behalf of Chelsea and Myself, and the wider group of breeders/exhibitors/handlers that this impacts, we would like to address some rumors that have been floating around.

I will admit that I am disappointed that people in the fancy haven’t had the respect to come and talk to us directly, but chatter behind our backs and spread half truths. This was not the first time hearing of such rumors and so we felt we needed to address it. Our breed doesn’t improve without honesty, and we are prepared to be honest with anyone who will ask. Chelsea and I pride ourselves with open honest conversations.

I would like to address the rumor that one of Tex’s littermates has epilepsy. That is not true.

We are in regular contact with all of the owners of the dogs and no one has shown any symptoms, and are healthy dogs who will be 3 this summer – of course none of us have a crystal ball to know the future, but that is true for any breeding or litter or dog we have regardless of their breed or breeding.

Furthermore, Tex has sired several litters with no issues in any puppies at this time.

What is true is that there was an “oops” unplanned litter that occurred between a brother and sister – two full littermates of Tex’s. The resulting puppies of that litter were placed with that knowledge to the new owners and none of these puppies will sire/whelp a litter. This was obviously not a planned breeding and full littermates made it very inbred which is never ideal.

Last August (2023), one of the resulting puppies from that litter, experienced one single series of mild focal petite activity, on one day.

This puppy was in an extreme heat situation with smoke from local fires present and she was under stress when they occurred. This puppy was checked by a vet, and is being monitored and has not had any kind of seizure activity since. She has not been medicated or treated for this, as it was over by the time she was seen by a vet, with no after effects.

It is unknown if the external circumstances played a part, but it would seem logical since she has not had any issues before or since that day.

We are hesitant to call this “epilepsy” as it has been an isolated event so far, with extreme and abnormal circumstances surrounding it. The vets also agree that they would not categorize it as “epilepsy” at this time for that same reason.

The other puppies, and this one, will continue to be monitored. So far they are all happy and loved members of families. We are thankful.

If anyone has any questions or concerns, please contact myself or Chelsea about it. We would prefer honest conversations rather than hearing about chatter behind our backs.

Thank you so much

Sarah

New International Champion Titles

My friends Dolly, Malia and Ruthie and I went to Ridgefield to play at the International Dog show there.

We took beagles Savannah (Kazuri’s It’s Gonna Be Peachy), Gypsy (Joyful Noise N Kazuri Just Lace and Paper Flowers) and Whimsy (Joyful Noise N Kazuri Just Glitter in the Wind). Whim did not show but Savannah and Gypsy had a wonderful day. Both got their Puppy IntCH and Gypsy went on to get owner handled reserve best in show for the puppies. Talk about an incredible finish to the day!!

We took 4 cavaliers – Teddy (Kazuri’s Roosevelt Rough Rider), Puck (Kazuri’s Light Up The Ice), Charlie (Kazuri’s The Mystery of Hope) and Piper (Kazuri’s Play Me Another Love Song). All four attained top marks for their age and got their INT CH titles. I was so so thrilled indeed.

It was a busy weekend with loads of memories and fun. I am so glad I have these opportunities to hang out with my friends, road trip and show our amazing dogs. thank you to all the families who are guardians for some of these dogs and allow me to borrow them to show.

Tex is number one in the USA

I am so very proud of Tex, piloted by none other than Mike Kurtzner.

This boy is young and learning the ropes of showing more consistently – Chelsea and I couldn’t be prouder to have Tex stand amongst other wonderful dogs in the top rankings.

There is a lot of time between now and the end of the year, but for now we will be excited that for January Tex was #1 15 inch beagle.

Tex – GCHB Kazuri N Van-Mar Trouble In Texas – bred and co-owned by Sarah Sweetman and Chelsea Metteer.

First Champion for 2024 and 8th champion for Spencer x Pud

Our first Champion for 2024 was certainly a special one!! This is New CH Kazuri N Van-Mar Trouble With Penny Lane “Penny” (Spencer x Puddin) finishing in grand style by going WB/BOW for a 4 pt major under breeder-judge Ann Roth at the Southern California Beagle Club Specialty in Palm Springs.

Penny is such a special girl, being lovingly owned by Ralph and Susan Gaffagan and did not step foot into a ring until she was a year old (which was not even in the plans until then as we had sold her as a companion!). Chelsea and I were offered the opportunity to show her and finish all 8 puppies from this litter. Penny quickly garnered several points and BOS over specials a handful of times.

Penny is now a glowing 2 year-old and such a happy-go-lucky girl with an attitude of gold and a constantly-wagging tail. We so grateful for Ralph and Susan for not only allowing her to come with Chelsea to shows and for embracing the adventure and raising such a confident dog that takes everything in stride! I am thankful to Chelsea who showed her each time.

As Penny’s breeders, Sarah Sweetman and Chelsea Metteer are so grateful to Ralph and Susan for this opportunity to showcase Penny and the entire litter of 8 Champions. We couldn’t be more proud and are so thrilled to have achieved this together.

2023 Recap – what an incredible year.

What an INCREDIBLE year indeed. Here is a recap of it all. I have SO much to be thankful for – most of all for my beagle and cavalier community – I couldn’t have done any of this without you all.

Nick – MBIS MBISS GCHP Kazuri’s All I Want For Christmas CGC TKN ATT finished the year as the #1 15 inch beagle for the 2nd year. He was recognized at the 2023 National Beagle Club as People’s Choice as voted by fellow breeders. He is in semi-retirement and will show in select shows in 2024 and beyond. We are also thrilled that he had 6 more of his progeny finish their CH titles and several others are close to finishing. These six gives him 12 CH get already. I am so thankful to the breeders who incorporated Nick into their program and am excited to see what happens next.

We had several champion beagles

McKinley – CH Kazuri’s Aint No Mountain High Enough (CH The Whims Legato x CH Hailstorm’s Feeling A Little Foxy at Kazuri)

Callie – CH Kazuri’s Everything’s Sugar N Spice (CH Bill T’s Rush to Alpenglow X CH Kazuri’s Everythings Coming Up Roses). She finished in the 13 inch TOP 20 for 2023

Murphy – CH Kazuri’s Everything’s Gonna Be Alright (CH Bill T’s Rush to Alpenglow X CH Kazuri’s Everythings Coming Up Roses) – lovingly owned by Sarah Smith-Falkner and Sarah Sweetman

Audrey – CH Rosehound’s Brown Eyed Girl at Kazuri (MBIS MBISS GCHP Kazuri’s All I Want For Christmas CGC TKN ATT X CH Foxtail’s Fast Curves) – bred by Bonnie and William Farrell and owned by Bonnie Farrell and Sarah Sweetman

And a Cavalier King Charles Champion also

Stevie – CH Kazuri’s You Are the Sunshine of My Life (CH Angels Pride Zakkary X LoKazuri Star Fourth In Line)

And a First time achievement for Sarah

I also won my first (personal) specialty show with Dutch (BISS GCH Van-Mar N Kazuri Brewin Up Trouble) bred by myself (Sarah Sweetman) and Chelsea Metteer and lovingly owned by Sarah Smith-Falkner, Sarah Sweetman and Chelsea Metteer. While my dogs have achieved this before, this was the first time I have been at the end of the leash for it.

I am so grateful for an incredible year of achievements. Let’s go 2024!!

The Beagle National Recap

I’ve needed to take a moment to breathe and just feel so thankful to be able to attend the National Beagle Show in Mesquite Texas last week.

I am thankful for the friendship and comradery from the group of us that came together from Washington – to Dolly, Malia, Ruthie, Bonnie, to seeing friends I have known for years and others I got to meet for the first time finally after knowing them online (I wont list everyone as I am bound to forget someone). I say it all the time – I truly believe we are better together, and that community is better than competition. I try to live by those values.

I am thankful for the whole team under David and Ann to put on such a wonderful event

I am thankful for the opportunity to show my dogs and breeding program – Callie “CH Kazuri’s Everything’s Gonna Be Sugar N Spice” made the final cut in 13s with me on the leash.

Murphy with Karen, “CH Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” went BOS in 13s with Karen.

Nick with Mike (MBIS MBISS GCHP Kazuri’s All I Want For Christmas CGC TKN ATT) made the cut at the national but really shone being recognized as the #1 15 inch for 2022, Stud dog of the year for 2022 and amazing us by going People’s Choice at the National.

I am thankful to Leigh and Helen for entrusting us with Puddin and that she got “dam of the year” alongside sire Spencer. I loved celebrating with Terri & Dan and Chelsea – Spencer also won “sire of the year”.

Not to mention, sweet baby Savannah “Kazuri’s Gonna Be Peachy” who at 15 weeks with co-owner Malia, took every moment of the National in stride, travelling like a rockstar and kissing as many people as she could and utilizing any lap for a bed.

I am thankful to Mike and Karen for your wisdom and partnership – for taking my dogs to places they couldn’t have gone with just me.

I am thankful for those who brought my dogs to the National to show – Chelsea with the wonderful Tex “GCH Kazuri N Van-Mar Trouble In Texas” and his sister Penny “Kazuri N Van-Mar Trouble with Penny Lane” and Terri with Audrey “BISS GCH Kazuri N Van-Mar Trouble At Tiffany’s” and was so so proud to watch them exhibit so beautifully.

I am thankful for my friends and roommates Pat and Harmoni for sharing a room with me

I am thankful for the opportunity to touch and feel dogs, and talk to owners and be surrounded by so many beautiful beagles – some of whom i hope to incorporate into my lines.

I am sure I have missed things, and I am sorry if i did – I had a blast and can’t wait to see you all in 2024!! ❤

7 week photos of the ckcs and beagle puppies as they play outside

The puppies are tiny dogs now and love nothing more than when they can play in the big yard with the big dogs. Right now the weather in the PNW is unpredictable and so we make the most of going outside every moment we can.

The cavaliers are growing confidence as the beagle puppies show them the ropes. Our golden is a perfect playmate as she is gentle and shows them big dogs are nothing to be afraid of. Even dogs that are visiting like Darwin the beagle, enjoy moments of play – even if they try to nurse from him.

I am enjoying every moment with these precious little ones. I have just under 2 weeks before the first of the beagles starts to fly the coup. Sigh.

Ckcs and beagle pups get their 6 week photos taken on the blue chair

The cavalier king charles and beagle pups love exploring and food. Their little personalities are starting to emerge and we are loving geting to know them.

please excuse the food on their faces – they had just enthusiastically eaten lunch and then had a little playtime – it’s real life when raising pups but we wanted to make the most of a short break in the rain and i didnt want to make them cold by giving them a full bath
