Phoenix’s CKCS puppies open their eyes

It’s been a long but wonderful week. I wasn’t entirely sure the 2 boys were going to make it to this milestone as they were not gaining weight despite me giving them support with Sub-Q, warmth and top up feedings (so they wouldn’t get tired nursing).

However, I am feeling more optimistic with the whole litter reaching their “double birthweight” milestone and opening their eyes.

So – without further ado, the 4 houses of Hogwarts

Puff (Hufflepuff) (Girl 1)

Gryffin (Gryffindoor) (Boy 1)

Raven (Ravenclaw) (Girl 2)

Sly (Slytherin) (Boy 2)

Sylvie’s baby beagle girl has opened her eyes

We came up with a name for Sylvie’s little survivor – LILIBET. It seemed fitting to honor the late Queen Elizabeth II who just passed away. She was strong, determined, soft hearted, and a huge advocate for pure breeds.

Little Lilibet is growing little a sweet little flower. She is sweet and mellow and yawns when we pick her up. Her eyes are open and we are delighted at how she is growing so far. Syl is a content and attentive mother – we couldn’t ask for more after all she went through.

Phoenix’s CKCS pups first official photos

Phoenix’s pups are now 4 days old so I figured it was time for official photos. It is starting to become very obvious the size difference between the boys and the girls.

Girl 1: Blenheim

Girl 2: Ruby

Boy 1: Ruby (with white stripe)

Boy 2: Ruby (no stripe)

Sylvie’s beagle babies

Sometimes breeding brings us so much joy. And sometimes it brings us heartache. This post is one with some heartache – I have endeavored to be honest about the good, the bad, the ups and downs with my journey in breeding and so I want to share this also. You have been warned and I understand if you dont want to read on.

Sylvie’s baby #2 (the biggest girl) thrived from day 1. She was big and healthy and I am grateful. The first baby, I bottle and tube fed for support as she was tiny – I was afraid that she would use up her energy trying to find a nipple instead of growing so she had equal time with mom and supported with a bottle. Baby #3 was born with an overbite. While overbites are fairly common in neonates (they help the latch), this one was an extreme overbite. More than that, she also struggled to breathe, often gasping for air when there was no reason for it.

I took these photos of the 3 girls. Little did I know, they would be the first and last official photos of baby 1 and 3. We lost them both within the first week of birth. To say that we tried everything to save them is an understatement, but I also firmly believe that sometimes it is not meant to be. I am grateful to Dr Thoreson and the team at Klahaya Animal Hospital who took great care of them (and me) this week.

Sylvie got to see both girls after each passed. She grieved a bit but is going amazingly well. Did she know there was something wrong? or is this just natures way? I dont know, but I am grateful she hasn’t skipped a beat in taking care of our precious survivor.

Watson the cavalier gets BOB at Enumclaw

I was so proud to pilot Watson myself this weekend and we got Best Of Breed on Saturday under judge Mrs Donelle Richards. We then went on to make the cut in a competitive toy group and even played in the Owner handler group.

I am very proud of this 2.5 year old boy who is proving to hold his own and we are just a few points shy of his Grand CH now.

The final pictures of Vixen’s Beagle pups

*Sob* – this is the final post I will be doing of these precious little ones as they will start going to their new homes. I will be keeping close tabs on them of course, but it is always bittersweet to say goodbye. It has been so special to raise these precious little babies.

Cinnamon is now going to be called Willow – Kazuri’s Cover Me In Sunshine. I will co-own her with Maria from Starfall Samoyds.

Nutmeg (yet to be named) will be moving to live with his 1/2 brother with the Miller family

Ginger is now known as Crosby – Kazuri’s Answered Prayer and will be living with his mother Vixen who is retiring and the Neuenschwander family in Oregon

Clove who is staying at Kazuri and his now going to be called Aspen – Kazuri’s Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.

The cavalier babies venture outside.

The cavalier babies are big enough to go outside, but it has been a bit cold and rainy. Today we had a break in the rain and so we took them outside for their first garden adventure.

They had a lot of fun and especially enjoyed being with the other big dogs but only lasted about 30 minutes before they were shivering and cold so we took them back inside. But all in all it was a successful adventure.

I love these little pumpkins and watching them grow and explore. It’s hard to believe they are 5 weeks old already.

The Cavalier babies update

I got Covid-19 this week – thankfully I am vaccinated and so my symptoms have been fairly mild – mostly I have been exhausted and so I have been just in “get the basics done” mode. And so, taking photos got put on the back burner until I felt up to doing it.

The babies are growing like beautiful little weeds – they are stronger and playing together. They are running and wrestling and growling and have definitely found their sweet little voices barking with delight when I bring their meals. They LOVE food 🙂 It’s good. They are eating 3 meals a day now and only nursing a few times a day – Charlotte is enjoying becoming more of a playmate than a mommy.

Enjoy their latest photos.

Puppy playtime in the Yard

Anytime there is a break in the rain, and it isn’t too cold, we pop the pups outside for a little playtime. The pack loves playing with them too – our son’s 6 month old Golden Shirley is in love with the babies and loves to wrestle with them. For the most part she is very gentle but we stay very close by, just in case.

Grandma Madison and Momma Rosie love to get in the action too. 🙂 Both are wonderful matriachs and teachers of fun and healthy boundaries.

I hope you enjoy these photos of the babies in our gardens tonight – by the time I had finished taking photos, it was getting a little dark (thanks Winter 🙂 ), but you still get the idea.
